Lee Seung-u

Lee Seung -U ( born February 21, 1959 in Jangheung, Jeollanam -do) is a South Korean writer.

Life

Lee Seung- u was born in the small coastal town in the province of South Jeolla. After completing primary school he attended for a year in middle school and lived away from his family with an uncle. When his mother decided that the family should live together again, he moved to Seoul where he attended the Joongang University of associated middle and high school. He led an unsettled life, lived in many different places with his older brother and for a time with relatives.

He decided to study theology and was accepted after an examination as a fellow at the Theological University of Seoul. During this time he immersed himself in the poems of Oh Kyu -won and Chong Hyon -jong and in the novels of Yi Chong -jun and Yun Heung -gil. Especially the works of Yi Chong -jun served him as a model.

In 1981 he was diagnosed with in the suitability test for military service tuberculosis. Instead of being a soldier, he went to the spa town Cheolwon in Gangwon Province, where his mother owned a business. In December of the same year, the novel portrait of Erysichthon was awarded the Hankuk literary prize for young writers. After his literary debut, he worked at the Protestant magazine " Sinangsegye " ( world of faith ), rented a room in Gaebong -dong. His literary activity, the study of theology and life collided heavily with each other, which meant that he finished his studies at the Graduate School after two semesters.

In 1987, he beat then finally take the path of a professional writer.

Since 2001 he teaches literature at the University of Joseon.
