Lee Zavitz

Leland " Lee" George Zavitz ( born August 20, 1904 in Mount Vernon, Washington, † June 2, 1977 in Los Angeles ) was a special effects technician for Destination Moon the Oscar for Best Visual Effects was awarded in 1951.

Life

In 1939, he was first in John Ford's ... then the hurricane for the special effects were responsible. This was followed by movies like Gone with the Wind, where he was responsible for the fire effects, Under the Black Flag and Diary of a Chambermaid. In 1951 he received for Destination Moon the Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects. The science fiction film based on a novel by Robert A. Heinlein.

In the 1950s he also worked in the special effects, among others, on such films as Abbott and Costello as pirates against his will, Around the World in 80 Days and From the Earth to the Moon. His last film in 1969 was the American war film The castle in the Ardennes by director Sydney Pollack.
