Leipzig Bay

The Leipzig lowlands is a relatively lakes and treeless, but due to very high soil fertility distinguishing landscape in the north-west and south-east of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt.

Originally, this area was very rich in forests and waters. In the course of urbanization and evolving since the 1920s lignite opencast mine but huge areas are cleared and many waters channeled or diverted. The Leipzig lowlands is bordered to the north by the Duebener Heath, east of the Elbe, in the south of the Erzgebirge and the Middle Saxon hill country and in the west of the river Saale. In the center of Leipzig lowlands is the metropolitan area Leipzig-Halle. Other major cities are Delitzsch, hurry castle, Merseburg and Borna.

Geology

The Leipzig lowlands is Altmoränenland while the southernmost part of the North German lowlands. The landscape is essentially a plane with only minor elevations, such as the Hohburger mountains, interrupted by the large river valleys of the Saale, White Elster, Mulde and splices.

The Leipzig lowlands originated in the Tertiary. As the Erzgebirge and the Vogtland collected, formed as a compensation movement a basin in which weathering material of the mountains was deposited. Through bog formation and changing flooding also organic material could settle on in this basin, which was in turn overlain by sediments. These deposits are brown coal, which is covered with layers of sand and loess was formed.

Location

Traffic Technically, the landscape is very well developed. To the conurbation around leads a heart-shaped ring road, the so-called middle German loop. Leipzig / Halle Airport is the main " hub " in the eastern states. In all directions leading railway lines and major roads, the Leipzig lowlands connect to the other parts of the country. Only the IWT has no direct access to this area, although already in the middle of the 19th century began with the unfinished Elster -Saale- channel.

Importance

The Leipzig region is historically, culturally and economically of great importance for Central Germany.
