Leipzig-Schönefeld

Schönefeld is situated in the north- east of Leipzig district. In administrative terms the development area Schönefeld -Ost is now a separate district of Leipzig, while the old town is the district able Schönefeld - Abtnaundorf together with Abtnaundorf.

History

In 1270, the margrave's village was first mentioned under the name Schonenuelt. From 1307 to the Reformation, the village belonged to the Augustinian Canons of St. Thomas in Leipzig. 1527 the village church was rebuilt after a fire.

After devastation in the Thirty Years' War, the then owner Georg H. von Thummel was again build the palatial manor house in baroque forms. On May 27, 1738, the writer Moritz August was born of Thümmel on the estate. 1747 inherited the manor of Councilor Johann Friedrich Zeumer. During the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813, the village was completely destroyed, but in 1820 the construction of the still used today Memorial Church was completed.

During the second half of the 19th century, Schönefeld developed into a working-class suburb. The population increased from 889 (1834) to 14,879 (1910). 1896 Schoenefeld received after the Leipzig tram network.

1915 was finally the annexation to Leipzig.

In the years 1974-1976 the new residential complex Schönefeld -Ost was carrying more than 4,000 homes built (→ prefabricated buildings in Leipzig).

Attractions

  • Memorial Church until 1820 newly built in 1816, Evangelical Lutheran classical sacred building. In it married on September 12, 1840 Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck. The church hall is located in the Ossietzkystraße 39 in Schönefeld.
  • Eberstein - grave pyramid: In addition to the Memorial Church is the grave - Eberstein pyramid, which was built in 1883-1885 by order of Hedwig von Eberstein by architect Constantin Lipsius.
