Leo Honkala

Leo " Balatonelle " Ilmo Honkala ( born January 8, 1933, Oulu) is a Finnish former wrestler. He was bronze medalist at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki.

Career

Honkala started for the club Pyrintö Oulu, Oulu Poliisi - Urheilijoita and Tampere Poliisi - Urheilijoita (from circa 1954 ).

At the Summer Olympics in Helsinki in 1952, the 19- year-old Honkala finished behind Boris Gurevich from the Soviet Union and Ignazio Fabra of Italy in third place and won thus in the Greco-Roman 52 kg category bronze. Towards this medal he defeated Werner Zimmer from the Saarland, Mahmoud Fawzi from Egypt and Heinrich Weber from Germany. In the fight against Weber he was lucky, as the jury, converted to a protest of the Finnish team lead out the judgment that was the first to point gelautet winner Weber in point winner Honkola. Many Ringer experts saw it as a "gift" of the international Ringer Association to the Finnish host at the expense of Heinrich Weber. In the battle for silver and bronze medals Honkola defeated by Ignazio Fabra of Italy and against Boris Gurevich from the Soviet Union. In other international championships he was not at the start.

1954 was Leo Honkala in a Finnish national team, which struggled against Sweden. He defeated it against Edvin Vesterby on points and won by the same score over the World Champion from 1950 Bengt Johansson.

After his playing days as a wrestler was Leo Honkala one of the most successful coaches in Finland, the Finnish Ringer led many in the 1960s and 1970s in the top. In 1974 he went to Sweden as a coach and also worked there as a wrestler extremely successful coach. His master class was the multiple Swedish champion Frank Andersson.

In Sweden Leo Honkala began in an already advanced age powerlifting ( powerlifting ). He started it for AK Borlänge. From 1980, he presented it in the different age groups on a number of Swedish records. In November 2006, the 73 -year-old Honkala was tested positive at the Senior European Weightlifting Championships in the Czech Republic on anabolic steroids and banned for two years. Honkala admitted to have the funds via the Internet and worried that he had previously worked with such methods.
