Leo Jud

Leo Jud Leo Juda or Leo Keller (* 1482 in Guémar in Upper Alsace, † 19 June 1542 in Zurich ) was a Swiss reformer Alsatian origin.

Life

Born the son of a priest, he first attended the Latin school in Schlettstadt and studied from 1499 in Basel and Freiburg im Breisgau medicine. In 1505 he turned in Basel of theology and became friends with Ulrich Zwingli. From 1507 to 1510 he was a deacon in Basel, then studied further and was in 1512 a doctoral thesis MA.

Subsequently, he was secular priest in St. Hippolyte and 1519 as the successor of Zwingli in Einsiedeln and began to translate the Bible. In 1523 he took over the parish of St. Peter in Zurich, Zwingli was married and closest collaborator. Him he stood by at the Zurich disputation, and was an energetic member of the Zurich Prophezey. He was a preacher, hymn writer, marriage judge, lecturer and Bible translation (together with Zwingli at Zurich Bible ). With Heinrich Bullinger, he developed the Zurich church order. His Psalm seals were used among others in the Psaltervertonung of Sigmund Hemmel.

The friends of Zwingli as Jud and others were very active in the translation and production of Reformation writings, which were printed in Zurich and reached a wide readership.
