Léon-Étienne Duval

Léon -Etienne Cardinal Duval ( born November 9, 1903 in Chênex, Haute -Savoie, France; † 30 May 1996 Algiers, Algeria) was Archbishop of Algiers.

Life

Léon -Etienne Duval studied in Annecy and Rome, the subjects Catholic theology and philosophy. He received on 18 December 1926, the sacrament of Holy Orders and became parish priest of the diocese of Annecy, a lecturer at the Seminary of the Diocese. From 1942 to 1946 he served as vicar general of the administration of the Archdiocese of Algiers.

1946 Pope Pius XII appointed him. Bishop of Constantine, 1954 Archbishop of Algiers. Léon- Etienne Duval took part in the years 1962-1965 at the Second Vatican Council. From 1963 to 1988 he headed the North African Catholic Bishops' Conference ( CERNA ).

In 1965, Pope Paul VI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Balbina in the College of Cardinals. The management of the Archdiocese of Algiers put Léon- Etienne Duval in 1988, down from age. He died on 30 May 1996 in Algiers and was buried in the local cathedral.

The Archbishop of Rouen, Joseph Duval, was his nephew.
