León de los Aldama, often short León, is a city in central Mexico and is with about 1.6 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area is the largest city in the surrounding area. It is located about 400 km northwest of Mexico City in the state of Guanajuato. Production of leather is considered the most important industry. Many people who live in the area, visit the city often, to buy clothes and especially shoes.

León is the seat of the Archdiocese of León.

Population

The population of León consists largely of mestizos (over 70% ) together, the proportion of whites makes up about 15%. In addition, indigenous people represent 10%; Asians, mostly Koreans will account for 5 % of the total population of León.

  • Churches: Basilica Catedral (The Cathedral was built in 1765 ), Templo de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles ( end of the 18th century built ), Templo Gotic (1921 commenced and still unfinished), Templo y Jardin San Juan de Dios.
  • Museums: Museo de la Ciudad (City Museum ), Museo de Archeology y Archivo Historico de la Ciudad ( Museum of Archaeology and Historical City Archives ), Museo Panteon Taurino ( Bullfighting Museum ), Museo y Centro de Ciencias Explora ( the interactive science center is home to its 9,500 sqm four large halls and a park ).
  • Other buildings: Casa de la Cultura, Presidencia Municipal ( 1860), Arco Triunfal (1893 erected to mark the 83rd anniversary of Mexican independence ).
  • Systems: Jardin Botanica ( Botanical Garden ), Parque Zoológico de León ( the zoo houses more than 2,000 animals ), Parque Metropolitano (more than 260 acres in size ).
  • Public places: Plaza de los Martires (the name recalls the fighting various political groups from the year 1946).

History

The city was founded in 1576 by Spanish colonists. It is located 1,804 meters above sea level in a fertile river valley that is used intensively for agriculture. Near the town there are gold, silver and copper mines.

Sports

In Estadio Nou Camp ( until 1986 Estadio Guanajuato ) were 1970 and 1986 Games of the Soccer World Championships took place. Among others, the German team wore there, in 1970 all their preliminary matches and the quarter-final match against England, which was won 3-2 after extra time.

The city was already represented by the following football clubs in the highest Mexican League: Club León ( since 2012/13 again top notch ), Unión de Curtidores and Club San Sebastián.
