Leon Wyczółkowski

Leon January Wyczółkowski ( born April 11, 1852 in Huta Miastkowska at Garwolin, † December 27, 1936 in Warsaw) was a Polish painter, graphic artist and illustrator.

Life

Wyczółkowski studied at the Warsaw School of Art, among others at Antoni Kamieński, Rafał Hadziewicz and Wojciech Gerson and then in Munich (1875-1877) and the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts (1877-1879) by Jan Matejko. In 1895 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Cracow, whose rector he was in the years 1910/11. In 1911 he gave up his work at the Academy and in 1930 was appointed Honorary Professor of the University.

Originally, he painted historical, but later mainly landscape and genre pictures. He is one of the leaders of the Young Poland period in Polish painting.
