Leptophobia eleone is a butterfly of the family of White (Pieridae ). In addition to L. eleone eleone there is the subspecies L. eleone denigrata.

Features

The moths have a wingspan of about 40 millimeters. The dominant color of the upper wing surface is yellowish with a black pattern on the edges of the front wing. In the females, as well as the subspecies L. eleone denigrata this pattern significantly wider, as noted by the scientific name of the subspecies alludes. Furthermore eleone at the subspecies L. eleone the yellow tone much stronger. The underside of the wings and the cores are solid white.

Occurrence

The animals are common in the area of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes between Venezuela and Bolivia. Most often they are found between 2500-3300 meters above sea level. The endemic in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta subspecies L. eleone denigrata is also common to 2000 meters.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed mainly on plants of the genera cabbage ( Brassica ) and nasturtium (Tropaeolum ), where they ruderale also accept Lepidium in the rearing.
