Les Leston

Alfred Lazarus Fingleston ( born December 16, 1920 in Nottingham, † 13 May 2012), better known as Les Leston, was a British racing driver.

Career

Les Leston was in the early 1950s, one of the best racers in the British 500 cc Formula 3 scene still young. In 1952, he celebrated his first victory on the continent, when he won the Grand Prix of Luxembourg. After he was both in 1952 as well as 1953 second in the championship, he secured the title of a 1954 British Formula 3 championship in a works Cooper.

In addition to an engagement with John Willment whose Cooper sports car he drove in the World Sportscar Championship, Leston 1956 debuted at the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1 on a factory Connaught Type B he fell out due to a technical defect. With the same car he was a few weeks later third in the Richmond Trophy.

In 1957 he drove a Formula 2 Cooper T43 at national races, a factory BRM P25 at the British Grand Prix at Aintree and was in the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring sixth on an Aston Martin.

After a serious accident in Caen 1958 Leston concentrated increasingly on building his company, which established in racing gear. But until the early 1960s he was a regular guest at the British Club race with his Lotus Elite.
