Lesley Ashburner

Lesley T. Ashburner ( born October 2, 1883 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † November 12, 1950 in Bethesda, Maryland) was an American hurdler.

Life

As a student at Cornell University, he distinguished himself as a specialist in the hurdles. In 1904 he set a record for its university over 100 -yard hurdles in the hall. As a result, he was nominated for the Olympic Games in St. Louis. At that time there were in the United States no knockouts, the athletes were mainly suggested by the most prestigious sports clubs and universities.

In parallel to the Olympic events that were held in 1904 as part of the exposition held in St. Louis World's Fair Louisiana Purchase, also several non- Olympic competitions were held. Many athletes started with so-called handicap races, as well as Lesley Ashburner. In a corresponding run on 120 -yard hurdles he won ahead of Fred school, which should be Olympic champion several days later. For the Olympic 110- meter hurdles to Ashburner qualified as second forward travel of his, where he already had to concede defeat school. In the finals, he eventually finished third.

Ashburner participated in 1905 and 1906 for its university at numerous competitions. At its special route 120 -yard hurdles in 1905, he won the city championship of New York City, the Canadian Open Championships and placed in a competition of universities again to a record for its university.

1906 Ashburner graduated as an engineer in the construction industry and ended his sports career. When he first joined an engineering firm in Philadelphia, he worked at the time of the First World War at the Washington Navy Yard. He then spent 14 years as a civil engineer in Los Angeles. In 1939 he returned to Washington, D.C. and worked as a consulting engineer for the armed forces of the United States. As such, he was involved in planning the Pentagon and other government buildings.

1991 Lesley Ashburner was posthumously added to the Hall of Fame of his university, Cornell Big Red Hall of Fame.
