Lesneven

Lesneven ( Lesneven Breton ) is a commune in the Finistère department 7125 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). It is located in the north- west of Brittany, just a few kilometers south of the English Channel coast. Brest located 24 km south-west Paris and about 480 km to the east. On the eastern municipal boundary of the flow Quillimadec runs.

In Landerneau and Brest are the next departures of the highway E 50 (Rennes - Brest) and regional stations. The regional airport Aéroport de Brest Bretagne is located 16 km southwest.

History

In the 5th and 6th century immigrants from South West Wales founded the forerunner community, emerged from the Lesneven. In the Breton War of Succession, the town changed hands several times between the English and French control.

During WW2 the place came Lesneven some importance as there on August 20, 1944, negotiations for surrender of the German forces with the American General Donald straw failed and the so-called Battle of Brest began. Then went on September 20, 1944 there, the German General Hermann -Bernhard Ramcke, Fortress Commander of Brest, after the capitulation in captivity. In place extistiert a military cemetery, are buried in the occupation, among other members of the German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen.
