Lester del Rey

Lester del Rey ( June 2, 1915 * Clydesdale, Minnesota, † May 10, 1993 in New York ) was an American science fiction writer and editor. He always claimed his full name loud Ramon Felipe San Juan Mario Silvio Enrico Smith Heath Court -Brace Sierra y Alvarez del Rey y de los Verdes, probably, however, he has come as Leonard Knapp on the world.

Life

Del Rey was discovered in 1938 and promoted by John W. Campbell. He wrote under numerous pseudonyms for almost all known Pulp Magazines (as Charles Satterfield, Edson McCann, John Alvarez, Marion Henry, Philip James, Philip St. John, Erik Van LHIN, Kenneth Wright, Wade Kaempfert, Ramon F. Alvarez- del Rey and Cameron Hall ). When his stories once not sold well, he used to work in a fast food restaurant as a cook. After marriage with Helen Schlaz 1945 he devoted himself entirely to writing and also worked as an editor and bureau chief for the literary agency of Scott Meredith. Later he was editor of several journals simultaneously equal to, where he used his various aliases.

He was responsible for 1952 and 1953, the start of titles like Space SF, Fantasy Fiction, Science Fiction Adventures (as Philip St. John ), Rocket Stories ( as Wade Kaempfert ), and Fantasy Fiction ( as Cameron Hall ). He was co-editor of the magazine Galaxy in 1968 and took over in the 1970s, along with his new wife Judy -Lynn del Rey, SF editors of Ballantine Books. The two were there so successful that the SF series from 1977 appeared under the new imprint " Del Rey Books". The first book of the new label was The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks, today it published next to SF and fantasy and manga.

Del Rey received the 1972 EE Smith Memorial Award for Imaginative Fiction ( also called Skylark Award ) and 1985 Balrog Special Award, a prize for the magazine Locus had a survey by the most popular fantasy author organized their readers. 1990 Del Rey was awarded the Grand Master Award from the SFWA.
