Levski, Pleven Province

Levski (Bulgarian: Левски ) is a town in northern Bulgaria. It is located 43 km east of the town of Pleven, in the far southeastern tip of the Oblast Pleven.

During the Ottoman rule over Bulgaria ( until 1878 ) it received the Turkish name Karağaç ( German: "Black elm "). 1897, the site then after Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski ( 1837-1873 ) was benannt.1945 the town was declared a city. He was the first village in Bulgaria, which was named after the Second World War to the city.

Municipality Levski

Levski is the administrative center of the homonymous municipality Levski. The municipality covers 414 km2 and includes the villages next to Levski Asenowzi, Asparuchowo, Boschurluk, Balgarene, Warana, Gradischte, Isgrew, Kosar Belene, Maltschik, Obnowa, Stescherowo and Trantschowiza. The 13 municipal districts in 2005 had a population of 25,607.

Through the village the highway Sofia - Pleven - Russian Varna runs.

By Levski Sofia - Varna railway line, the Sofia - Ruse and runs. In Levski the railway line Levski Lovech Trojans branches and the railway line Levski Svishtov.

Geography

The city is located in the Bulgarian Danube Lowland, 40 km south of the Danube. the city lies in the valley of the Osam river.

History

The region has been inhabited since ancient times. It remains have been found of prehistoric settlements, as well as from the Roman period and necropolises, Roman roads and archaeological finds from the early days of Christianity and the Middle Ages.

Near the village Balgarene is an old stone bridge to visit - the " Roman Bridge ".

Economy

In the region of the nahrunsmittelverarbeitende industry, mechanical engineering and light industry are traditionally represented. After the introduction of the market economy in Bulgaria ( 1990), experienced the economy, as in the whole of Bulgaria, a serious crisis. Since 2000, the economy revived and the investment is increasing.
