Liatris

Liatris ( Liatris spicata )

The splendor of slits ( Liatris ) are a genus of flowering plants in the sunflower family ( Asteraceae). The botanical genus name is derived from the Greek words Leios for smooth and Iatros for doctor; clarify the scope of which, however, is unclear. There are about 16 to 50 species.

Description

Liatris species grow as perennial herbaceous plants that reach heights of growth from 20 to 180 cm. They often form spherical to ovoid tubers and rhizomes elongated than outlasting. The upright stems are usually unbranched, branched or rarely at the base. The alternate, sessile or stalked leaves are more or less grassy with smooth leaf margins.

In terminal aged men to racemose total inflorescences often stand together many basket- shaped part inflorescences that bloom from top to bottom. The 18 to 40 are unequal bracts (rarely two) usually three to seven series and their edges are often ciliate or toothed unevenly. The flat inflorescence base has no chaff leaves. The flower heads have a diameter of usually 3 to 22 ( 2.5 to 25 ) mm and contain only three to 85 florets. The petals are mostly red purple to pink - on, sometimes white. The Kronröhren have a four to six times smaller in diameter, such as length.

There are eight to elfrippige formed achenes. The durable pappus consists of 12 to 40 bearded to feathery bristles in one to two rows.

Systematics and distribution

The Liatris species are mostly found in Canada and the U.S.; also in Mexico and the Bahamas. Only a few species and their varieties are used as ornamental plants.

The genus Liatris in 1791 by Joseph gardener in Johann Christian Daniel Schreber: Gen. Pl, 2, 542 set up. A synonym for Liatris Gaertn. ex Schreb. is Lacinaria Hill.

Liatris belongs to the subtribe Liatrinae in the tribe Eupatorieae in the subfamily of herbaceous within the sunflower family ( Asteraceae). Liatris is closely related to Garberia A.Gray from Florida, but the only way Garberia heterophylla ( W.Bartram ) Merrill & F.Harper this genus is a shrub that also has different achenes.

The differentiation of the species is difficult and is aggravated by the little hybridization species. There are about 16 to 50 Liatris species ( selection):
