Liberec District

The Okres Liberec (German: District Reichenberg ) was a territorial entity in the Liberec Region (Region Reichenberg ) in the Czech Republic. The Okresy were roughly comparable to the districts in Germany, the district administrations were dissolved on 31 December 2002. The district is located in northern Bohemia and extended from Jeschke mountains to the Jizera Mountains.

163 thousand inhabitants living in an area of 989 km ² in 59 municipalities with 247 districts. In the nine cities, 85% of the population live. The district is one of the most densely populated districts of the Czech Republic. 42 % of the area is forested, 48 % can be used for agriculture.

The Liberecko region is heavily industrialized. The most important sectors form metal processing, mechanical engineering, textile and plastics processing industry and more and more automotive suppliers. Due to the sharp decline in the textile industry, many jobs and export markets were lost. The unemployment rate is 9.2 %, which is still below the national average, although it is the highest in the Liberec Region. The gross salary is below the national average.

Due to its location the district offers a year-round program for tourists. Besides winter sports established itself more and more walking holidays, along with a number of cultural and historical attractions. At the foot of the Jizera Mountains are numerous bogs, in Český Dub are objects of folk architecture in Frýdlant palaces and castles.

On January 1, 2007, the district was extended to the city Jablonné v Podještědí and the community Janovice v Podještědí from the Okres Ceska Lipa.
