The Liberty Bridge (Hungarian Szabadság híd ) is one of the nine bridges across the Danube in Budapest, Hungary. It connects the Buda Szent Gellert ter with the Pest little ring.

History

On the occasion of the celebrations for the 1000th anniversary of the conquest, the building was handed over in a ceremony on October 4, 1896 after about two years of construction, as a third bridge over the Danube the brogues. Planning and design of the bridge took over the Hungarian engineer János Feketeházy. When it was completed it was called Franz Joseph Bridge in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph. Originally the Danube crossing Fővám Square Bridge should be called after the nearby eponymous square.

Like all the Budapest bridges across the Danube was also the Liberty Bridge on January 16, 1945 demolition squads of the German Wehrmacht victim. But already on 20 August 1946 ie one and a half years later, the bridge was reopened after the faithful reconstruction of the first of the nine bridges. Thanks to the low damage to the rapid reconstruction was possible. Even the old ornaments, the royal coat of arms and the birds described above could be obtained and used for the reconstruction. On the occasion of the reopening, it was renamed Liberty Bridge.

In the years 2007/2008, the building was extensively renovated.

Details

The Bridge in the Art Nouveau forms three iron truss arches with drawstring and has a bridge deck lying down. The span between the piers is 175 meters, which are generated by a pillar to the corresponding shore 78.1 meters. The entire structure was a greenish color after the protective coating. High above the iron bridge gates sit four turul birds with outstretched wings on golden balls.

Built for the collection of bridge toll booths now serves as a museum of Budapest bridges across the Danube.

In the media

The bridge is mapped to a 1.50 -forint stamp of 1964.

In the summer of 2013 filming took place using a remote-controlled helicopter camera by the German ZDF television crew. The resulting strip is to be broadcast in the autumn of the year.
