Geography

Geographical location

Lichtenau is located in Baden- Württemberg in the Upper Rhine Valley on the Rhine between Rastatt and Kehl in Hanauerland.

Neighboring communities

The city is bordered to the north by the Rhine Munster, on the east by Otter Weier, to the south by the city and the city Achern Rheinau, both in Ortenaukreis. In the west the city is bordered to the Rhine forms the border to Alsace (France) here.

History

The city dates back to a moated castle, the building of the Bishop of Strasbourg during the years 1293 to 1296, and had surrounded the place with wall, moat and wall. Culture and sights

Lichtenau is the terminus of the Baden Asparagus Route, which passes by many sights.

Theater

The Court Theatre Scherzheim Lichtenau has a small theater with about 50 seats.

The home club Medicus runs the history museum of the city.

Memorials

Since 1986 a memorial stone next to the plot Schmiedstraße 2 refers to the synagogue of the Jewish population. While they remained at the 1938 November pogrom undamaged, but was later demolished. The former Jewish school building is now integrated into a kindergarten.

Structures

In the district Scherzheim the first church of Baden's famous architect Friedrich Weinbrenner was built. Built in 1811, it became the formative model for the churches in the style of classicism in Baden.
