Linda Keen

Linda Goldway Keen ( born as Linda Goldway; born August 9, 1940 in New York City ) is an American mathematician.

Life and work

Keen studied at the City College of New York and at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University, where she earned her doctorate at Lipman Bers 1964. 1964/65 she was at the Institute for Advanced Study and then at Hunter College of the City University of New York ( CUNY ). In 1968 she is at Lehman College of CUNY, where she has been a professor since 1974 and also a member of the CUNY Graduate Center. Keen was also a visiting professor and visiting scholar at Princeton University, the University of California, Berkeley, MIT, Boston University and Columbia University.

She worked on Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces ( Teichmüller spaces, they classify conformal structures on Riemann surfaces ) and higher-dimensional hyperbolic geometry ( supply of Riemann surfaces of two-dimensional examples), as well as the complex dynamics of the theory associated Klein'schen and Fuchsian groups. Some of them worked here together with Caroline Series. Already in her dissertation at Bers she gave geometric interpretations of real - analytic structure of Teichmüller spaces that had Bers and Lars Ahlfors previously studied. With Caroline Series, she examined introduced by Bernard Maskit complex - analytic structure of Teichmüller spaces with geometric methods of hyperbolic geometry, William Thurston had developed with his school.

From Keen derived for the geometric analysis of hyperbolic surfaces important Collar lemma, the closed geodesic curves on hyperbolic surfaces a neighborhood area ( collar neighborhood ) associates with a square measure that depends only on the length of the geodesic and increases monotonically with this.

1985 to 1986 she was president of the Association for Women in Mathematics. 1992 to 1995 she was Vice President of the American Mathematical Society, whose fellow she is. In 1993 she was Noether Lecturer ( Hyperbolic geometry and spaces of Riemann Surfaces ).
