Linda Sharrock

Linda Sharrock ( born April 2, 1947 in Philadelphia as Linda Chambers ) is an American jazz singer.

Life and work

Sharrock first sang in gospel and in school choirs and studied classical singing lessons. At age 17, she moved to study art in New York City, but soon began in the groups of Pharoah Sanders, Milford Graves, Sirone, Joe Bonner and Sonny Sharrock, her future husband to enter. She went with him in her and in his productions. She has appeared in Herbie Mann and directed with her husband groups like The Band of Outlaws or Band of Savages. She took under his own name plates " Black Woman " (1969), " Monkey Pockie Boo" (1974) and "Bird of Paradise " (1975) on. After her divorce in 1978 she withdrew for a time from the music business.

After a long journey through Asia, she found a new base in Vienna for a second jazz career. Together with her husband Wolfgang puschnig she appeared with the trio AM4 as well as on the Pat Brothers and the formation formed from these and percussionist of SamulNori Red Sun. Their album " On Holiday " is considered a successful attempt by a contemporary access to Billie Holiday. Sharrock and puschnig also formed Trio with Arto Tuncboyaciyan ( live album at the Festival de Jazz Vitoria -Gasteiz 1995) or Michel Godard. On their CD "Confessions " (2005), which received Album of the Year with the Hans Koller Prize in 2005, she plays with the French pianist Stéphan Oliva and bassist Claude Tchamitchian.
