Lindsay L. Cooper

Lindsay L. Cooper (born 18 January 1940 in Glasgow, † June 19, 2001 in Edinburgh ) was a British bass player ( cello and tuba), who initially worked in the entertainment and pop music and then jazz and improvised music devoted.

Life and work

Cooper, who grew up in Scotland, moved in 1965 to London to become a professional musician. He hired soon as a ship's musician and worked on the Queen Mary and passenger ships of the P & O line with interruptions, until 1970. Then he worked with Strawbs, with Ken Colyer and with Mike Oldfield ( on whose album Tubular Bells 1973 he was involved). He also studied with Peter Ind, and then mainly in the jazz field to act. He recorded with Ken Hyder, with John Stevens ' amalgam and the Spontaneous Music Orchestra led by this. He also played with Stan Tracey, Keith Tippett, Derek Bailey, Kenny Wheeler, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Bobby Bradford and Yusef Lateef, in the late 1970s, he moved to Zurich, where he worked with Urs Blöchlinger and then later in a trio Day & Taxi with Christoph worked Gallio and Dieter Ulrich, but also with Nat Su and Ulrich. Furthermore, he was engaged in Mark Hächlers Old River Town Jazz Band, recorded with the two albums for Elite (also known as tuba ). In the early 1990s he returned to Scotland, where he founded a workshop for free improvised music in Edinburgh. He also played with Bill Wells and the Pearl Fishers.
