The first album of the project, Liquid Tension Experiment was recorded in just six days in 1998. The debut includes eight pieces composed as well as a nearly 30 -minute jam session called Three Minute Warning. Following the publication of a concert at NAMM was given on 31 January 1999.

The second album, Liquid Tension Experiment 2 has been largely taken between 11 October and 29 November 1998. It contains eight pieces that last between four and a half and just under 17 minutes and are improvised by those three.

The nearly 17-minute main piece 'When the Water Breaks ' bears his name, because John Petrucci's wife at the time of recording sessions gave birth to their daughter Kiara. It also contains some elements that refer to the event: So to start a (children's) music box to hear and Petrucci imitated during the piece several times baby sounds with his guitar. Due to the birth of some guitar tracks were only in 1999, are recorded a few months after the principal photography.

After the recording of the first LTE album, keyboardist Jordan Rudess and Petrucci Portnoy's Dream master tape had joined the theater, where he had become the successor of Derek Sherinian. Because now say three of the four members LTE Dream Theater were active, it was agreed that there would be until further notice, no new LTE Photos more. It was also Mike Portnoy claims to be from the record label Magna Carta in the Liquid Tension Experiment had released their two albums, cheated, which is why he wanted to work no more with Magna Carta.

Second phase (since 2007)

In early 2007 a meeting between Tony Levin and LTE members of Dream Theater took place. A continuation of the project in 2008 was no longer excluded from the members.

On 26 October 2007 appeared under the name "Liquid Trio Experiment" an album called Spontaneous Combustion. It includes recordings that were made during the work on the second Liquid Tension Experiment album, at the time, as Petrucci's first daughter Kiara was born and he was with his wife in the hospital. During this time, the musicians Levin, Rudess and Portnoy played a few spontaneous jams, because they did not want to pass up the booked studio time.

For the tenth anniversary of this cooperation, the four musicians performed again in the United States, including in the context of the Near Festival in Bethlehem (Pennsylvania).

In 2009 they had the live album Liquid Trio Experiment 2: When the Keyboard Breaks. Live in Chicago. The album's title is an allusion to the song When The Water Breaks from 1999 and refers to problems with Rudess ' keyboard about the middle of the show at the Park West, which prompted the musicians to exchange their instruments with each other and the rest of the performance completely to improvise. On the album exclusively this improvised part is completely contained. As a ( spontaneous ) guest Charlie Benante acted by the metal band Anthrax.
