Since it was conquered by the Franks Swabia / Alamannia was divided into districts, each of which was placed under a Count. Many of those original names have survived to this day as a landscape name. The county districts were divided in turn into Teilgaue whose names have also held partially. With the -w -in- Gowe is a strain -w, - uu - out.

Between Upper Burgundy and Alemannia / Swabia, the area was Argowe (now Aargau, the river Aar ) which was disputed. This was divided into the upper and the lower Aargau Aargau.
