Augst - Main Street, Ergolzbrücke and old customs

Augst (Basel German: Augscht [ aʊɡʃt ʰ ] ) is a municipality in the district of Liestal in the canton of Basel -Country in Switzerland. The community was formerly called Baselaugst - to distinguish it from the lying in Aargau Kaiseraugst.

Geography

The municipality is situated on Augst 275 meters above sea level at the northeastern end of the canton of Basel-Country, at the mouth of Ergolz into the Rhine.

History

The name goes back to the Augst located on the terrace spur between Ergolz and Violenbach from the 1st to the 3rd century Roman town of Augusta Raurica.

In the Middle Ages formed at the Ergolzbrücke, where there were the customs and a mill, the settlement Augst. 1442 Augst was separated and the village on the right side of the Violenbaches came with the reign Rheinfelden to Austria and was henceforth called Kaiseraugst. The left bank situated village part came in 1461 with the reign Farnsburg in the possession of the city of Basel and has since called Baselaugst or even Augst.

Coat of arms

On a red background with a silver lion's head with golden tongue and golden crown. This is the coat of arms of the noble servants Pfirter of Liestal, which moved in the bridge toll on the Ergolz in Augst the 14th century.

Attractions

The municipal area of Augst and Kaiseraugst (AG) are the ruins of the Roman town of Augusta Raurica. On a tour of the extensive area you will encounter include a theater, an amphitheater, temples, the Forum, baths equipment with water line, a pottery kiln, remains a Hypokaustenheizung, city walls, a monument, etc. In a zoo animal species are kept as they were to be met at the time of the Romans.
