List of Latinised names

The Latinization of personal names was widespread especially among scholars of the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance humanists, whose language was Latin. Since " barbaric ", ie non-Latin names could be used only cumbersome in the discussion, you Latinized it, that is, they resembled in to the Latin.

This happened on two fundamentally different ways:

  • Formal: by phonetic approximation or even addition of a Latin deklinierbaren suffix ( '' Kistner → Cisnerus ''). Italians, Spanish and French came here usually made with minimal changes.
  • Etymologically: by loan translation, ie corresponding translation of the verbal elements ( '' Goldschmidt → Aurifaber '').

Occasionally one also spread to Latinized name origin back ( '' Johannes Muller Regiomontanus from Königsberg → '').

Was a prerequisite for such spontaneous formations that still there was no need to fix personal names or protect would have been regulated just as the spelling of the language. First names were anyway, until recently translated into the language of the speaker (about Christopher Columbus, Mary Stuart ).

Since the Latin in the 16th century against the vernaculars enjoyed higher prestige, almost every Western scholars both gained a Latinized or even Graecized name, sometimes side by side. In the 17th and 18th centuries, then came the Romanization of the name about the extent again into disuse as the vernacular languages were loosing the Latin in teaching and learning.

Even the ancient Romans had foreign names phonetically aligned with the Latin, partly Etruscan mediation ( '' Ulysses '' → Ulixes ). In particularly large extent the names of oriental scholars were in the Middle Ages Latinized ( '' Abū Alī al -Husayn ibn ibn Sīnā Abdullāh → Avicenna ''); also K'ung -fu- tzu is known in Europe almost exclusively under his Latinized name '' Confucius ''.
