This list of flags of the Malaysian states gives a brief explanation of the flags of the Malaysian states and territories.
History
The Federation of Malaya was granted independence in 1957. There were plans to extend the Federation on the still under British rule areas in Singapore, Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah. However, these were rejected by Brunei in 1962. As the Philippines in 1963 made legal claims on Sabah claim that they turned so against the proposed confederation and submitted complaint to the International Court of Justice.
In 1963, Indonesia also faced the inclusion of the on island Borneo states of Sarawak and Sabah in the proposed Federation, supported the Philippines in their claim and posted snipers in the affected areas. The Federation of Malaya was extended by yet Sarawak and Sabah as well as Singapore. The new confederation was called the Federation of Malaysia. Brunei was a British protectorate in 1984 independently.
The fact that each state and each federal territory has its own Hoheitzszeichen, emphasizes its autonomy within the Federation. The three federal territories also have an additional common flag.
