Political parties of the United States lists political parties in the United States.

Overview

The United States is a pluralist multi-party system, with most offices are occupied by members of the two largest parties, a result of the applied majority voting and limited to those parties access to the ballot. It has been in the history of the United States a lot of third parties, but most third parties are regarded as politically insignificant and short-lived.

Despite this general reputation, many third parties were regionally successful and some even found their proposals (especially the Prohibition Party and the Socialist Party of America ) in the party program of the Democrats or Republicans again.

Categorization of American parties

For the purpose of this article shall be divided into four groups. The first group is " Active Large parties " with the above- mentioned definition. The second group are " Other significant parties ", where " meaning" is measured by how successful the party was going to get their presidential candidate on the ballot. The third group, "Active small and regional third parties," consists of all active parties that do not fall into the first two groups. The last group, "the former parties," is for parties that are no longer actively participate in the political system of the United States.
