List of universities in Austria

This list includes all universities, private universities and colleges in Austria sorted by states in alphabetical order in each case.

In addition, can be found at the end of each list a table with the five largest and the five oldest universities separately for clarity of perception.

State universities have a long tradition in Austria: Austria's oldest university is the University founded in 1365 Vienna, by far the largest in Austria. About one hundred years before the University of Graz Habsburg Albert -Ludwigs- University of Freiburg was founded.

In Austria, the establishment of vocational higher education programs only in 1993 and the accreditation of educational institutions as a private university in 2003 was made possible.

Currently, there are 22 public universities Austria ( 21 universities in accordance with the Universities Act 2002 and furnished by a separate federal law University of Continuing Education Krems) and 11 private universities. Furthermore, there are 21 providers of Fachhochschule degree programs, 12 of which are as colleges and organized than the other holders of FH degree programs ( Fachhochschule institutions). Currently, the number of students in Austria are on the rise. Currently (February 1, 2010) are reported in Austrian public universities 273 678 students. The Austrian portion thereof is 77% and the proportion of women 53%. At the private universities 10 5,829 students were with stand winter semester 2009 / reported and 36,085 students were registered on November 15, 2009 in Austria colleges and study outputs.
