Lithocarpus edulis

Lithocarpus edulis is a plant of the species-rich genus Lithocarpus in the subfamily Quercoideae within the beech family ( Fagaceae ). It is native to Japan and is used in warm temperate, frost- free areas as an ornamental plant.

Description

Lithocarpus edulis is an evergreen tree that reaches the heights of growth to 9 meters. The bark is smooth and gray blue. The change-constant leaves are leathery and smooth edges.

The seed has a length of about 2.5 cm and a diameter of about 8 mm, and has the shape of a glans penis.

Dissemination, locations in culture in Europe and use

Lithocarpus edulis is native to Japan from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu on the Ryukyu Islands.

Lithocarpus edulis is not winter hardy in Central Europe; in the British Isles he can thrive in the warmest southwestern areas outdoors.

The seeds are edible raw or cooked.
