Systematics and history of research

Litsea is a genus of the laurel family ( Lauraceae ). It was first described in 1792 by Jean Baptiste de Lamarck in the Encyclopédie de Monnet méthodique, Botanique. The scientific name is derived from Litse, the Chinese name of the plant. The genus is probably polyphyletic, a revision is pending. The types are similar to those of the genus Lindera, they differ from them by the vierkammerigen dust bag, Lindera species form only two chambers. Synonyms of the genus are Iozoste Nees, Sebifera Lour. and tetra Thera Jacq ..
