Interpretation

The binding force that emanates from children for couple relationships is rarely addressed in the theater. Ibsen does it in Little Eyolf, which is not small, because to him circling relationship planet, called parents. Ibsen succeeds so a timeless relationship box that could fit well in German mid-terrace houses. His characters take throughout the piece more and more contours, where more and more typical characteristics of men and women are clearly without the piece threatens abzukippen in plate clichés. In spite of bereavement in the family and in spite of all unspoken depths that are typical of Ibsen, and always come to light, the piece will end up with a positive twist. The piece gives courage to embark on children, tasks and relationships. Ibsen's message could be: Not lonely Ichlinge ( as Alfred at the beginning of the piece ), the world needs, but courageous and relationship- enabled Anpacker like Rita.

Performance history

The piece has recently experienced a renaissance because it was " negotiating with the parent-child problems and the conflict of self-realization and responsibility issues that are virulent but in our increasingly childless and meaningless ego - society. "
