Llanbedrog

Llanbedrog is a municipality in the county of Gwynedd ( North West Wales ), formerly Caernarfonshire County.

General

Llanbedrog located on the southeast coast of the Lleyn Peninsula ( Welsh: Penrhyn Llŷn ) in the Irish Sea between Pwllheli and Abersoch. South of the village is the headland of Mynydd Tir -y- cwmwd.

A granite quarry was used economically in the period from the late 19th century to 1949. Since the early 20th century, tourism is an important source of income. Therefore, the private horse - tram Pwllheli and Llanbedrog Tramway was built by Pwllheli after Llanbedrog. The Tramway was operated as a horse tram from 1899 to 1919, then switched to current operation. The route has been indeed partially destroyed by storms in 1927, the track pieces obtained are, however, still busy.

The former estates " Plas Glyn -y- Weddw " by Lady Love Jones Parry, built in 1856, is today the arts and cultural center of the village. Lady Jones - Parry's husband, Sir Thomas Duncombe Love Jones - Parry, under his bardic name Elphin was a prominent member of the Eisteddfod ( festivals of literature, music and singing in Wales).

The name of the village comes from the Holy Petroc, a Welsh form of the Irish Patrick.

Iceland Bardsey ( Ynys Enlli ) in the Bay of Pwllheli is in some Welsh myths regarded as the mysterious place Avallun (see also Avalon ).
