Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch [ˌɬan.ˈvair.puɬ.ˌɡwɪn.ɡɘɬ.ɡo.ˌɡe.rɪ.ˌχwɪrn.ˌdro.buɬ.ˌɬan.tɘ.ˈsi.lio.ˌɡo.ɡo.ˈɡoːχ] (Debate? / I ) is a municipality in the southern part of the island of Anglesey in the same county in the North West of Wales. In 2001, it had 3040 inhabitants.
Place name
Origin
The name comes from the Welsh language and translates as:
" St. Mary's Church ( Llanfair ) in a trough ( Pwll ) of white hazel ( gwyn Gyll ) near (ger) a rapid vortex ( chwyrn drobwll ) and the Thysiliokirche ( Llantysilio ) in the red cave ( ogo goch ). "
Often the place name with Llanfair PG, Llanfair or Llanfairpwllgwyngyll is abbreviated. Welsh said the village usually only Llanfairpwll or simply Llanfair ( " St. Mary's "). The English, however, call it simply Gogogoch.
A shoemaker came up with the tongue twister in the 19th century, to make the former village to trade more attractive and to move the railway company to set up on the main London- Manchester - Holyhead train stations. The original name was merely Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll.
With 58 letters, the village has the longest official place name in Europe now. With the name of the village became a tourist destination and the most famous village in Wales. In the village there is a restored Victorian railway station.
Guinness Book of World Records
The domain of the place was noted in the 2002 Guinness Book of Records with its 58 letters as the longest one-word domain names in the world.
