LMMS

Linux MultiMedia Studio ( LMMS ) is a platform-independent Open Source Digital Audio Workstation, which is licensed under the GPLv2. LMMS will use as a sound system, software synthesizers, and MIDI Control System Beat-/Bassline-Editor.

Using the graphical user interface can be created as well as melodies and rhythms together samples and even mixed. LMMS supports LADSPA interfaces, MIDI, SoundFont and VST. LMMS includes a large library of pre- synthesizer sounds and samples in Ogg Vorbis format. Since version 0.4.0 Linux MultiMedia Studio is based on the Qt4 framework. It had to be completely rewritten for this purpose, since the port from the older 0.3.x version to Qt4 was not possible.

Equipment

Song Editor

The Song Editor is a central component to the arrangement of the song, a kind of playlist for all to be played Entities. It consists of different tracks can be shifted and multiplied at will. Their three main elements, which are used in it, are the instrument track, the sample track and the beat / baseline track.

Instrument Track

The instrument track contains so-called Patterns ( grades or steps). Through them, you get extensive setting options in the instrument window, in addition also of instrument plug-ins, envelopes, LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators ), filters, arpeggios, chords, effects, and MIDI.

Beat Bassline Editor

Due to the Beat Bassline Editor you can create special tracks in the song editor that serve the rhythm. It consists of a total of 16 steps, which are shaded differently in Step 4 rhythm, for clarity. It is ideal for creating repetitive sequences, including the overlay to Kompostion complex beats is possible with him.

FX Mixer

The FX mixer has 64 FX channels and a master channel. Here the level of each channel can be set. Any number of instrument tracks are placed on one channel. Each of the channels can also be assigned to any number of effects. The effects can be switched on and off ( pass), if necessary. It is also possible to adjust the ratio between the effected (wet ) and the unchanged signal ( Dry). One way to pass the output of one channel to another channel, as it is possible for example, FL Studio, there is currently not yet. The 64 channels are divided into 4 groups, each with 16 channels and can be achieved using A to D on the left side of the mixer.

Piano Roll Editor

Piano roll is the main tool for editing patterns, ie setting and editing notes and steps. With it, any melodies can be composed and played. In addition to the real-time editing and adjusting the volume of the individual scores is possible.

Automation Editor

The automated change controls in LMMS, provides the necessary dynamics in music pieces. Drawing a trajectory using the automation editor is possible. Also almost all the controls in LMMS can be automated.

Controller rack

In the controller rack components are listed, with which almost all controls can be automatically controlled within the program.

  • LFO controller
  • Peak Controller

Instrument sounds and effects

LMMS has the following instruments in the plugin synthesizer / Instruments:

  • Sampler ( Audio File Processor )
  • Wavetable synthesizer ( BitInvader )
  • Kick & Bass Drum Synthesizer ( kicker)
  • Monophonic imitation of Roland TB -303 ( LB302 )
  • Melodic percussion synthesizer ( mallets )
  • Organ -like synthesizer (Organic )
  • GUS -compatible patch tool ( PatMan )
  • Playback of SondFont files (SF2 player )
  • Emulation of Commodore 64 chips ( SID)
  • Triple oscillator (Triple- Oscillator)
  • Vibrating string modeler ( Vibed )
  • Multiple ZynAddSubFX ( ZynAddSubFX )

Instruments

Add LMMS external MIDI devices ( such as keyboards ) use and thus separate the Played, or directly insert live. Alternatively can be used to play the instruments and the keyboard. In addition, can be - with some exceptions - all controllers in LMMS connect to any MIDI controler. Thus, the volume of an instrument via a controller for example, can regulate the keyboard, if this transfers the movement of the respective controller via MIDI. Can be forwarded to an available MIDI output instrument tracks their spending also. Thus, external sound can be controlled.

Compatibility

LMMS is compatible with the following standards:

  • ZynAddSubFX
  • SoundFont2
  • VST ( i)
  • LADSPA
  • GUS patches ( PatMan )
  • MIDI
  • FLP ( Fruityloops Project) files

Community

In the community there is a central platform called LMMS Sharing Platform for the exchange LMMS -related content, it also allowed to post reviews and comments. Meanwhile, already more than 1000 projects, and almost 300 presets have been uploaded to this platform.
