Loch Ard Gorge

The Loch Ard Gorge ( German: Loch Ard Gorge, ) is a ravine in the Port Campbell National Park, Victoria, Australia, of a cliff that was Iceland Archway upstream. The gorge is located a few kilometers west of the Twelve Apostles on the Great Ocean Road.

The gorge and the Iceland Archway is an example of erosion processes of the rocks. The approximately 25 -meter high stone arch Iceland Archway of limestone was known by its collapse in June 2009.

History

The gorge is named after the clipper Loch Ard, which ran on July 1, 1878 and close Muttonbird Iceland before the end of a three-month boat trip from the UK to Melbourne in the fog due sank. Of the 54 passengers and crew survived only Tom Pearce, a ship's boy, and Eva Carmichael, an Irishwoman who wanted to immigrate with her family. Both were 18 years old. Pearce was washed up on the beach and then rescued Eva Carmichael, who had swum five hours was flushed into the gorge and there called for help. Pearce climbed out of the canyon to seek help from the dairy farmers of Glenample station. Pearce was later honored for his rescue act with a medal of the Royal Humane Society of Victoria in Melbourne and received by the Government of Victoria a check for £ 1000th Eva stayed for six weeks in Australia, before returning on a steamboat in their home.

The natural stone arch, the Iceland Archway, collapsed in June 2009. Now only two single rock pillars can be seen. The two pillars have been called since the collapse officially Tom and Eva after the only survivor of the ship disaster.

Location and Area

The canyon is seven kilometers after the Twelve Apostles accessible via the Great Ocean Road. About stages, visitors can go to the beach which is not touristy developed.

There are some signs and Glenample station, which marks the end of the Great Ocean Walk, as well as a recreation area. Off the coast lies Muttonbird Iceland and Blowhole. Furthermore, there is near the Loch Ard Cemetery and the Thunder Cave.

The area comes in numerous scenes in the 1982 film shot The Pirate Movie and also in the TV series before travel to the Center of the Earth ( 1999) with Treat Williams. The endemic in Australia Dasyornis broadbenti bird is frequently seen in the gorge.
