Loituma

Loituma is a Finnish quartet that combines the Finnish vocal tradition with the sounds of the kantele. Gained international recognition the group through their interpretation of the song " Ievan polkka ".

History

Loituma was founded in the fall of 1989 as the Septet Jäykkä Leipä ( ' stiff bread ') at the Sibelius Academy, Department of Folk Music. For the original cast also included singers Sanna Kurki - Suonio and Tellu Paulasto; but both later went to Sweden and entered Hedningarna at. Anita Lehtola until 2000 was also a member of Hedningarna. Loituma was elected in 1997 at the Folk Music Festival Kaustinen for " Group of the Year ". Ievan Polkka

Ievan Polkka Song ( Eva's Polka) was originally written in 1937 by Eino Kettunen. Loituma were sung with her version of Ievan Polkka in ostfinnischem dialect known, which they supplemented by an intermezzo, which generally consists of sounds without meaning and uses only the voice as another musical instrument.
