Lokoja

Lokoja is the capital of the state of Kogi, Nigeria. The city in 2006 had about 61 886 inhabitants.

Location and economic

Lokoja at the confluence of the Niger with the Benue, about 480 km from the coast. Nearby is the Mount Patta (340 m).

Today it is a commercial center for the agricultural products of the surrounding country, mainly cotton. In the nearby mountains are iron ore mines.

History

1859 was a British trading post, which was later the headquarters of the Royal Niger Company and also served as a base of Christian mission. 1867 to 1869 there was the British Consulate in Lokoja.

1900 was the area of Lokoja staging area for British troops, who should conquer the north of Nigeria. Later the city became the capital of the British protectorate northern Nigeria.
