Long Beach Iceland, known by locals as LBI, is a barrier island on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and is part of Ocean County, New Jersey. The island is about 29 kilometers long and at its widest point 800 meters wide. The northern half of the island is only slightly developed, while the southern part is more densely populated. The inhabitants of the island live mainly from tourism and fisheries. A bridge connects the island to the mainland. Among the main attractions the Barnegat Lighthouse belongs to the northern tip of the island.

The island was a popular beach destination in the 19th century. The Engleside Hotel in Beach Haven offered as early as the 1870s, a wealthy segment of the population adequate accommodation. However, the easy access to New York City and Philadelphia also allowed poorer people here to spend a day at the beach. In July 1916, the island was, however, affected by the shark attacks, the nation's attracted attention at the time.
