Preserved wetlands in Europe

The Lonjsko Polje is located in the north of Croatia and is one of the largest and best preserved wetlands in Europe along the Sava River between the cities of Sisak and Nova Gradiška. The area with an area of ​​50,600 hectares has been made as a natural park under protection in 1998. The area of the nature park is 50,650 hectares. The nature reserve consists of vast oak forests, large variety of birds, there are very many storks here.

In spring and autumn the majority of the area is flooded by the Save. The flood remains an average of 30 to 100 days a year exist.

Alone, 239 species of birds live in this natural park.

Due to the number of about 45 stork nests, the village located in the Natural Park located Čigoč received in 1994 by the environmental foundation EUR nature as the first European town the title of " European Stork Village".
