Lord of Badenoch

Lord of Badenoch was a Scottish title of nobility in the 13th and 14th centuries. Badenoch was a historic district in the county of Inverness -shire and belongs to the district Badenoch and Strathspey in the Highlands. The title reign was probably under Alexander III. created after the suppression of the uprising of the Meic Uilleam and provided with parts of their lands. William Comyn, who was instrumental in the crackdown, was given the title probably bestowed to 1229 and gave it to his son Walter Comyn on. After this had died in 1258 without heirs, the title passed to his nephew John I. Comyn, the son of his brother Richard Comyn, over. After the death of John III. Comyn in 1306 was the first title vacant since his son John Comyn made ​​no claim to it. After 1314 he was killed at the Battle of Bannockburn and no heirs left, the title was first recovered and went in the same year in the newly created title Earl of Moray.

As was the title Earl of Moray after the death of John Randolph in 1346 initially fell again to the Crown, Lord of Badenoch was awarded in the following years a number of times as a subordinate. Thus, first to Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan ( later than 1370 ), who was nicknamed "Wolf of Badenoch ". Later led his illegitimate son, also named Alexander Stewart, the title. The most recent ceremony as subordinate title took place in 1599 to George Gordon.
