Los Angeles California Temple

The Los Angeles California Temple (formerly the Los Angeles Temple ) is the tenth still active and the second largest temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons ). He is on Santa Monica Boulevard in the Westwood district of Los Angeles. When he was ordained in 1956, he was the greatest temple of the Church and was only surpassed by the Salt Lake Temple with its extensions and additions. Apart from the Bern temple, he was the first to be built in a residential area is not predominantly of Mormon. The grounds also include a visitor center and the 'regional center for family history in Los Angeles ", both open to the public, as well as the mission center for Los Angeles.

History

The Los Angeles Temple was announced by President Heber J. Grant, as the Church on March 23, 1937 purchased a 98,000 -square-foot plot of the Harold Lloyd film company. However, financial problems caused by the Great Depression and the Second World War delayed the foundation stone was laid until 1951.

The plans for the temple were expanded to include a meeting room for priest, who was not common at temples, which were built according to the Salt Lake Temple, and to accommodate 300 worshipers to create per meeting.

This was the first temple with a statue of the angel Moroni on top of the tower since the Salt Lake Temple. First, the statue looked like the temple to the southeast and was aligned later at the request of President David O. McKay to the east.

The temple was designed as the last that the endowment ceremony was presented by actor instead of a movie. However, the film screening soon replaced the actor.

The Los Angeles California Temple was closed from November 2005 to July 2006 for renovations. The renovation included an seismic inspection and the complete transformation of the Baptistery, which was infested with mold long due to lack of ventilation.

Architecture

The temple was built in a modern style, including a 14,000 m² of cladding made of prefabricated concrete slabs, a mixture of ground quartz and white Portland cement. The very bright brown color has the advantage that they conceal the thin dust and soot layers that are deposited in Los Angeles usually on buildings. The temple is 112 meters long, 82 meters wide and 78 meters high. On the top of a 5 meter high statue of the angel Moroni is attached.

Due to its size and prominent location on a hill, the temple is a well landmark building in western Los Angeles, even if he in the wide area, the townscape is dominated not so much by the construction of high-rise buildings as at the beginning. Thus, the temple is easily accessible by car and has been deliberately applied to a through road and with particularly large parking lots.

It includes a baptistery, a celestial room, four Ordinanzräume, ten sealing rooms, and a meeting room which extends over the entire length of the temple. The celestial and the Ordinanzräume are decorated with wall paintings, as only in the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple.
