After he was at a young age under the influence of Oscar Cullmann and the form -historical school of exegesis itself Bouyer was open to scientific interpretation of Scripture and leaned pictorial or symbolic interpretations that can miss a clear justification in the text and thus his view of the arbitrariness open the door, chose from. As followers of the Bible movement, however, he placed great emphasis on the importance of tradition ( started by the Jewish right up to Christian ) for a proper understanding of Scripture.

In his ecclesiology, he was strongly influenced by the ecclesiological designs Johann Adam Mohler and John Henry Newman, also of thoughts of Russian Orthodox theologians such as Georgi Vasilyevich Florovsky.

During and after the Second Vatican Louis Bouyer occurred always for a "third way " beyond the camp battles between progressives and traditionalists, the rediscovery of a living tradition is owed , which is entirely Catholic, but also at the same time ecumenically though. The theology of Louis Bouyers is mainly characterized by a historical and spiritual perception.

For the Catholic Church, he is now one of the richest, most fertile and most respected theologians, comparable with Henri de Lubac, Jean Daniélou and Hans Urs von Balthasar. The preoccupation with the thought Louis Bouyers can do much to help the message of the last Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI. thoroughly to understand.
