Louis Brassin

Louis Brassin (* June 24, 1840 in Aachen, † May 17, 1884 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Belgian pianist, composer and music educator.

Life and work

Brassin Louis, the son of actor couple De Brassine gave his first concert at the age of six years in Hamburg. A year later, the father had a job in Leipzig and Louis attended the Conservatory as a pupil of Ignaz Moscheles. A memorable concert was the then eight- year-old in 1848 in Stade, where he along with his five year old brother Leopold, whom he had taught himself to play the piano, occurred. In 1857 he performed under the stage name Brassin for the first time in Belgium. From 1866 he taught at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. After his appointment as professor of piano at the Conservatory of Brussels, he settled in 1869 for ten years in Belgium, where he played an important role in the musical life of the country. In 1878 he took over the piano class of Theodor Leschetizky the Saint Petersburg Conservatory.

Brassin has numerous Richard Wagner pieces arranged for piano and wrote many smaller, now largely forgotten piano pieces. Among his students Edgar Tinel and Vasily Sapelnikov.

His brothers Leopold Brassin (1843-1890) and violinist Gerhard Brassin (1844-1885) undertook many joint concert tours, she taught at the Stern Conservatory but also in Bern. Both left mainly compositions for her instrument.
