Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is probably the most important museum of modern and contemporary art in Denmark.

It is located 35 kilometers north of Copenhagen in Humlebæk right on the shore of the Øresund. The museum building was designed by different architects and located on a plot on the hillside by the sea. All buildings are connected directly to each other. The park Öresund and lying on the west side garden with a lake are part of the museum. Sculpture, landscape art and designed nature are matched.

History

In 1958, the private, nationally recognized museum was opened by the founder Knud W. Jensen. It should first serve primarily the exhibition of modern Danish art. A few years later the work of contemporary international artists were presented increasingly. Meanwhile, Louisiana is a foundation.

Every year there are in addition to the extensive permanent exhibition four to six temporary exhibitions. On display are works by contemporary artists, including international art in the series " Louisiana Contemporary".

For existing buildings are adjacent to the main house - an ancient patrician villa - the modern extensions of the west wing and the Concert Hall (1958-1976), the South Wing (1982) and the East Wing (1992). In the years 1994-1998 the recent enlargements took place: the children's house on the lake was built and moved the museum shop in the basement.

The name of the museum goes to the previous owner of the building, Alexander Brun, back, who named the estate after his three wives, all of which had the name Louise.

Collection

The Louisiana Collection includes more than 3000 works of art from the period after 1945. Many of the pieces have international significance and includes major works by artists.

In recent years, the museum also acquired works by important young artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Elmgreen and Dragset, Julie Mehretu, Genzken, Doug Aitken and Jonathan Meese.

Special

Regularly, the museum exhibitions on specific topics together, which are then shown in the museum and later presented elsewhere. These exhibitions, the museum published literature. An example of such an exhibition was " Arne Jacobsen. Absolutely modern " for the 100th birthday of the Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, in addition to his furniture designs Egg, Swan and Series 7 - this includes regular collection of the museum - even replicas of complete rooms in his Gesamtkunstwerk SAS Royal Hotel were shown.

An exhibition of the work of Paul Klee titled Klee en Cobra. Het begint as a child was to be seen from January 2012 to April 2012 in the Cobra Museum. The exhibition was organized in collaboration with the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.
