Low Dietsch dialects

Platdiets ( Limb. Platduutsj, French Francique RHENO - mosan, thiois ) is the southernmost sub- dialect of Südostlimburgischs, which is spoken in the north - western part of the district of Verviers in the Belgian province of Liège. It shows the transition from südniederfränkischen Ostlimburgischen for West Central German Ripuarian.

Importance and dissemination

Platdiets is a transitional dialect in the Belgian province of Liège, more precisely in the three communities Bleyberg (eg Gemmenich ( Jömelejer Plat ), Homburg and Montzen ) Baelen and wilting Rath. This area is referred to in Dutch as Platdiets or Geullands ( Göhlländisch ). It is southernmost part of a closely related group of südniederfränkischen border dialects ( Ndl Oostlimburgs - Ripuarian ) comprising Südostlimburgisch ( in the Netherlands) and low-and West Bergisch ( the German middle Niederrhein). This dialect group belongs to the Limburg dialect region in the Rhenish fan.

It is called with all varieties in a semi-circle approximately 20 km to Aachen, and two -thirds of the Dutch South-East Limburg by some authors as the "three countries Platt". Platdiets represents the language of the old Duchy of Limburg, which had there its historic core.
