Lower Saxon State Department for Waterway, Coastal and Nature Conservation

The Lower Saxony Water Management, Coastal Defence and Nature Conservation Agency (NLWKN ) is a Lower Saxon State Office, based in the north, which is subordinated to the Minister for Environment and Climate Change.

Formation

As one of the youngest federal authorities NLWKN created on 1 January 2005 from the merger of several previously independent national authorities:

  • State Company for Water and Coastal Protection
  • State Agency for Ecology
  • Departments of Conservation and Water Management of the four 2004 resolved district governments (Weser -Ems, Hannover, Lüneburg and Braunschweig).

The state of Lower Saxony concentrated by this merging its national tasks of water management and nature conservation in a decentralized regional authority that was henceforth bound to no more administrative boundaries.

These are scattered throughout Lower Saxony and enable a regional presence: Aurich, Brake -Oldenburg, Cloppenburg, Hannover -Hildesheim, Lüneburg, Meppen, north - Norderney, Stade, Sulingen, South (Braunschweig and Göttingen ) and Verden.
