Loyal Griggs

Loyal Griggs ( born August 15, 1906 in Michigan; † May 6, 1978 in Laguna Hills, California ) was an American cinematographer.

Life

After high school graduation in 1927, Griggs worked for the special effects department of the Paramount studios. He was responsible for the earthquake sequences in the film San Francisco ( 1936) with Spencer Tracy. In 1938 he received along with other Paramount colleagues a technology Honorary Oscar for his work on the film predator fishing in Alaska ( Spawn of the North). The film His last betrayal ( Directed by: Lewis R. Foster) from 1950 was his first film as director of photography. In 1953 he was awarded for the camera work in the movie Shane an Oscar in the category Best color camera. Other Oscar nominations were for The Ten Commandments ( color camera, 1956), First Win ( black and white camera, 1965) and The Greatest Story Ever Told ( color camera, 1965). In 1971 he retired from the film industry.
