Ludwig Georg Courvoisier

Ludwig Georg Courvoisier ( born November 10, 1843 in Basel, † April 8, 1918 in Basel) was a Swiss surgeon and leader in the research of the biliary tree and their illness.

Ludwig Courvoisier studied medicine in Basel and Göttingen and put 1868 in Basel his state and doctor exam with a dissertation about the microscopic structure of the dorsal root ganglia. Courvoisier was assistant physician at August Socin. Study trips Courvoisier to London and Vienna. From 1871 he was a physician and surgeon at Deaconess Hospital until 1918 Riehen. In 1890 he published his landmark study " Casuistisch - statistical contributions to the pathology and surgery of the biliary tract ," in which he described the eponymous Courvoisier's sign (p. 57f ). 1880 was Courvoisier lecturer, associate professor in 1888 and in 1900 full professor of surgery at the University of Basel.

Courvoisier's enthusiasm for the flora and fauna found its expression in a large herbarium and a significant collection of butterflies as well as in numerous publications on his botanical and entomological investigations. Courvoisier was also involved as a politician in the Great Council and the Education Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.

The composer Walter Courvoisier was one of his sons.
