Ludwig Schwabe

Ludwig von Schwabe ( * June 24, 1835 in Giessen, † February 20, 1908 in Tübingen ) was a German philologist and archaeologist and Professor of Classics and Classical Archaeology.

Life

He studied classical philology and archeology in Giessen and Göttingen doctorate in 1857 in Giessen and habilitated in 1859. Afterwards he worked as a lecturer and in 1863 associate professor in Giessen. The end of 1863 he accepted a position at the University of Dorpat as professor of Classical Philology, 1865 Director of the University Library and in 1867 became dean. Eventually, he became in 1872 professor of classical philology and Chair of Classical Archaeology in Tübingen, where he was rector from 1881 to 1882.

He had a particular focus on the coin collection in the squirrel cabinet of the Archaeological Institute in Tübingen, which he led to national importance through targeted new acquisitions.

In 1880, he was raised by awarding the honor of Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown in the personal nobility. Since 1894 he was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.
